Music Curriculum
Music plays an important role in school life and is valued as a unique and powerful form of expression. Our music curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, build confidence and enable pupils to experience the joy of making music together. Through listening, performing, composing and learning about music from different times and cultures, children develop a broad and balanced understanding of this important subject.
All pupils benefit from bi‑weekly music lessons taught by a specialist music teacher, ensuring high‑quality instruction and progression across the school. These sessions focus on developing key musical skills such as rhythm, pitch, singing and performance, while nurturing enthusiasm and musical confidence. Children are encouraged to work collaboratively, listen carefully and reflect on their own and others’ performances.
In addition to specialist teaching, the wider music curriculum supports pupils in understanding the history of music, musical traditions and composers, as well as exploring how music has evolved over time. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build knowledge and vocabulary, helping pupils make connections between musical styles and periods while developing their appreciation of music in the wider world.
Music also enriches school life beyond the classroom. Our Key Stage 2 choir provides pupils with regular opportunities to sing together, perform and develop teamwork and self‑confidence. Taking part in the choir helps children experience the social and emotional benefits of music, promoting perseverance, pride and a sense of belonging.
We are proud to have close links with Irlam and Cadishead Brass Band, which greatly enrich our music provision. Each year, the band visits school to perform for pupils, allowing children to experience high‑quality live music and develop an appreciation of brass instruments and ensemble performance. These performances inspire pupils and help bring their classroom learning to life.
In addition, members of the band work directly with our Lower Key Stage 1 classes, delivering practical sessions using P Buzz. These sessions introduce pupils to basic brass techniques in a fun and accessible way, helping them to develop coordination, listening skills and confidence while making music together. The band also offers opportunities for individual music tuition outside of school, supporting pupils who wish to further develop their musical interests. This strong partnership provides valuable musical experiences and encourages a lifelong enjoyment of music.
Through our music provision, we aim to ensure that all pupils leave primary school with a positive attitude towards music, a secure understanding of musical concepts and the confidence to perform and express themselves creatively.
